Why should we use brackish water treatment?

Since freshwater resources are the lifeblood of economic and social development, the lack of directly available freshwater resources will restrict a country's economic and social development. What is brackish water?

Brackish water refers to water with a salinity between freshwater and seawater, typically with a total dissolved solids (TDS) range of 1,000–10,000 mg/L. Brackish water is commonly found as groundwater in arid or semi-arid regions. It can also occur in estuaries, coastal aquifers, and inland water sources resulting from long-term evaporation.

What are the hazards of brackish water?

1. Residents’ daily life and drinking water

(1) Long-term consumption of untreated brackish water can lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, digestive system diseases, and kidney failure, seriously endangering human health.

(2) Digestive system effects: Excessive sulfates and chlorides may cause diarrhea and indigestion.

(3) Salt and minerals can clog pipes, water heaters, and other household appliances, shortening their service life.

According to the WHO (World Health Organization) drinking water standards, the TDS content of drinking water should be less than 1000mg/L.

2. Agricultural irrigation

(1) Reduced crop yields: Crop yields will decrease significantly if brackish water is used for irrigation for several consecutive years.

(2) Land abandonment: When salinization is severe, the soil loses its arable value and becomes saline-alkali land.

(3) Deterioration of water resources: The salinity of groundwater may further increase due to back-infiltration, worsening the water environment.

3. Natural Disaster Emergency Response

During natural disasters and emergencies, brackish water is not a safe emergency water source.

Major risk: Exacerbating dehydration and posing health risks.

Other risks: Impact on disinfection, poor taste, and limited cleaning uses.

To address the impact of brackish water on residential and drinking water, agricultural irrigation, and natural disaster response, XJY Company has developed a brackish water desalination system that utilizes Reverse Osmosis technology to desalinate brackish water.

Reverse osmosis is a pressure-driven desalination process. It applies a pressure greater than the osmotic pressure of the high-concentration solution on the membrane side, forcing the solvent to permeate back to the low-concentration side. The reverse osmosis membrane only allows water molecules to pass through, while soluble salts, microorganisms, and organic matter in the water are prevented from passing through. The result is fresh water and concentrated liquid.

Advantages:

Simple equipment, easy operation, high water efficiency, and excellent water quality. The absence of phase transitions avoids many adverse effects associated with phase transitions.

4. Industrial Applications

(1) Brackish water in boiler cooling towers can cause scaling, corrosion, and biosludge, leading to economic losses: maintenance, descaling, equipment replacement, and downtime all increase operating costs.

(2) Brackish water is highly corrosive to pipes, valves, and heat exchangers, increasing maintenance costs.

(3) Industries such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverages require high-purity water. Brackish water has high TDS and hardness, and cannot meet process requirements without treatment.

Solution:

Advantages:

Two-stage reverse osmosis (RO) + electrodeionization (EDI) is an ideal combination for treating high-salinity brackish water. It not only efficiently desalinates and produces ultrapure water, but also reduces chemical consumption, contributing to environmental protection and energy conservation. It is particularly suitable for industries with extremely high water quality requirements, such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and power boiler feed water.

What are the advantages of brackish water desalination?

1. Seawater desalination VS brackish water treatment:

(1) Brackish water treatment is suitable for inland brackish water areas, agriculture, industry, and residential water supply; seawater desalination is suitable for coastal cities and islands.

(2) Brackish water can be obtained from nearby, and its energy consumption, investment, and operating costs are much lower than seawater desalination.

(3) Brackish water treatment requires relatively low chemical agents and pretreatment, while seawater desalination requires a stronger anti-scaling, anti-corrosion, and anti-biofouling filtration membrane system.

2.Brackish water treatment VS South-to-North Water Diversion

(1) South-to-North Water Diversion involves cross-regional water transfer and a long water transmission distance (over a thousand kilometers).

(2) South-to-North Water Diversion requires a large amount of energy consumption and maintenance to transport water resources.

(3) South-to-North Water Diversion requires investment in large-scale infrastructure, with an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars.

(4) Brackish water treatment has a lower unit water price and decentralized water supply reduces transportation costs.
