Calcium carbonate scale is a common scale problem, which can be easily controlled by using an ion exchange water softener to exchange calcium ions for sodium ions.

Additionally, scale inhibitors, such as sodium hexaformate, can be added. Scale inhibitors interfere with the precipitation of insoluble salts, keeping them in solution even beyond their solubility limits. Polymer scale inhibitors can also be used, sometimes in conjunction with dispersants, to disperse the formed flocs.

Acidic cleaning agents such as hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, or citric acid are effective in removing common scale deposits. Oxalic acid is particularly effective at removing iron deposits.
