Desalination In Water Treatment

2025-08-04

Water is essential for life, yet the quantity and quality of sustainable freshwater resources are becoming increasingly scarce. Population growth, shifting water use patterns, and climate change threaten our freshwater supply. Desalination is an important solution to address water scarcity, removing salt and dissolved solids from seawater to ensure sustainable water resources.

What is desalination in Water Treatment?

Desalination refers to the technical process of removing salt and impurities from seawater and converting it into fresh water that can be directly used, so that the water quality meets the standards for drinking, industrial production or agricultural irrigation.

The two most widely used technologies at present are Reverse Osmosis and distillation. Reverse osmosis uses a high-pressure pump to press seawater into a semipermeable membrane. Water molecules can pass through the membrane layer while salt is intercepted. It has the advantages of low energy consumption and small footprint, and has occupied more than 60% of the global desalination market. Distillation evaporates seawater by heating and then condenses the steam into fresh water. Among them, multi-stage flash evaporation technology is widely used in energy-rich regions such as the Middle East. Although it has high energy consumption, it can treat high-salinity seawater.

Xinjieyuan Company uses the most widely used reverse osmosis (RO) technology in the world. It drives seawater through the semipermeable membrane with high pressure to intercept salt and impurities to complete purification. This technology has significant advantages. It not only has low energy consumption (and continues to decline with technological progress), but also has flexible modular design, strong adaptability and high-quality water production. The core support for its efficient operation lies in high-performance membrane materials, efficient energy recovery devices and pretreatment systems.

New trends in desalination in water treatment

In recent years, the application of seawater desalination technology has shown explosive growth around the world.

As the world's largest reverse osmosis desalination plant, the Jubail Seawater Desalination Plant in Saudi Arabia can produce 1.4 million tons of fresh water every day to meet the water needs of millions of residents;

The Sorek Desalination Plant in Israel uses innovative energy-saving technologies to reduce the unit water production energy consumption to less than 3.5 kWh/m3, making the cost of desalinated water lower than traditional groundwater extraction.

In China, seawater desalination projects in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, Dagang, Tianjin and other places have achieved large-scale operation, with an annual production capacity of more than one million tons, providing important guarantees for water security in coastal areas.

At the same time, XJY also implements various environmental protection technologies and design methods to provide a sustainable and reliable source of fresh water, reducing dependence on limited rainwater, surface water and groundwater. Produce high-quality fresh water that meets strict drinking water standards. By reducing the need for groundwater extraction or surface water transfer, protect natural ecosystems and reduce the impact of water resource utilization on the ecology. Provide drought-resistant water sources and promote community and industrial development.

XJY desalination In water treatment future development

Seawater desalination has gradually transformed from an "expensive option" to an indispensable "lifeline project" and strategic water source for many water-scarce countries and regions. XJY will continue to innovate and practice science and technology to help the world solve the water resource dilemma and contribute to environmental protection.
